Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Latvia has extended the state of emergency period in the country until May 12, the Cabinet of Ministers decided on Tuesda, writes LETA/BNS.

The current state of emergency, which the government introduced from March 13, will end on April 14.

With today's government decision, the state of emergency has been extended until May 12.

Prime Minister Krisjanis Karins (New Unity) told the press after the government meeting today that the Covid-19 situation in Latvia is generally stable, and Latvia "looks good", compared to other countries.

"However, we may not relax because the pandemic is still spreading.  Today, in the government meeting, after consultations with epidemiologists and other specialists, the government took the decision to extent the state of emergency in the country until May 12. That means we are not increasing the restrictions, but at the same time we are not softening them," said the prime minister.

Karins thanked Latvian residents who had been responsible in relation to all restrictions and recommendations for the past four weeks. Also he thanks medics, police officers, border guards and media representatives who are working "in the front lines" to curb the disease. The prime minister also thanked the companies that keep working under the difficult circumstances.
