At the National Health Service's request, Latvia's airBaltic carrier brought around one million face masks and respirators from China overnight, the airline's spokeswoman Alise Briede told BC.

On Saturday, airBaltic performed a special flight to and from Urumqi International Airport in China, from Yiwu in Zhengzhou province, to bring 900,000 face masks and 80,000 respirators to Latvia.

With the help of the Latvian Foreign Ministry, the airline obtained all the necessary permits for the flight, including from China. The airBaltic flight landed back in Riga after midnight overnight.

Several more flights are expected to be conducted in the coming weeks.

As reported, in an effort to prevent Covid-19 from spreading further in Latvia, a state of emergency came into force on March 13, setting a number of tough restrictions. The state of emergency is in force until April 14.
