Tourist numbers in Jurmala up 5.4% last year

The number of tourists in Jurmala increased by 5.4% in 2019 compared to 2018, Elita Cepurite, Jurmala City Council spokeswoman, informed LETA, referring to the data from the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB).

Last year, Jurmala was the second favorite destination of all cities in the country for foreign and Latvian travelers alike.


The majority - 67% - of the total number of tourists in the resort city in 2019 were foreign tourists and 33% - guests from Latvia. Compared to 2018, the number of domestic travelers has increased by 4.3%, while the number of foreign tourists has increased by 5.9%.


Most tourists visiting Jurmala came from Latvia, Russia, Lithuania, Estonia, Germany and Finland. Compared to the previous year, the biggest increase was recorded for tourists from Sweden - plus 31.6%, Ukraine - plus 28.7%, as well as from Israel, Germany, Belarus and Lithuania.


The largest increase in the number of tourists occurred during the warmest period of the year, from June to August, when the resort town was visited by 23% more guests than during the same period of the previous year.


The municipality points out that Jurmala is increasingly being chosen as a travel destination also in the autumn and winter months - from October to December the number of visitors to the resort increased by 8.7% compared to the same period in 2018.


The longest staying guests in the resort town are from Belarus, Uzbekistan, Israel, Germany and Kazakhstan.
