Latvia’s Pasazieru Vilciens rail company carried 18.45 mln passengers in 2019, which is an increase of 2% against the same period a year ago, the company informed LETA.

The number of passengers increased on almost all lines, with the largest increase registered on Riga-Liepaja route - up 15% to 34,424 passengers, as well as Riga-Valga route.

The most popular route is Riga-Tukums, carrying 6.58 mln passengers in 2019, but also the only route showing a decline - down 1.3% from 2018.

Pasazieru Vilciens trains last year ran 602.7 mln kilometers. The total length of the routes is 981 kilometers.

Pasazieru Vilciens provides passenger services with 23 electric trains and 18 diesel trains.

Pasazieru Vilciens was established in 2001 to separate domestic passenger services from other functions performed by the state-owned Latvijas Dzelzcels (Latvian Railway). Although initially Pasazieru Vilciens was a 100-percent owned subsidiary of the Latvian Railway, in October 2008 it was transformed into an independent state-owned company.
