The thousands of tourists who travel from Russia to Estonia for New Year's Eve and Orthodox Christmas every year set a passenger record on the Tallinn-Moscow train route this season reported LETA/BNS.

For the holiday period from the end of last year to the beginning of the new year, Estonian Railways along with Russian Railways added eight additional trains on the route, which were used for travel by altogether 3,618 tourists. This is nearly 19 percent more than the number of passengers who traveled on additional trains traveling between Tallinn and Moscow during the previous holiday season.

In December, overall, the number of passengers who used the international passenger train was nearly 14,300. Compared with 2018, over 2,300 more passengers opted for train travel in December.

"The continued increase in interest from Russian tourists is very positive from an economic point of view, as a survey conducted by Enterprise Estonia a couple of years ago showed that an average Russian tourist traveling by train spent over 300 euros in Tallinn," Erik Laidvee, CEO of Estonian Railways, said.

The number of passengers on the Tallinn-St. Petersburg-Moscow train has been growing for several years now. In 2019, overall, the number of passengers was slightly over 111,100. This is nearly 4% more than in 2018.
