Latvia's Liepaja airport last year served 13,835 passengers, which is by 48.5% more than in 2018, Liepaja local council representative Evita Engele reported LETA.

She said that Liepaja airport last year served 428 regular flights, up 39.4% y-o-y, while the number of irregular flights increased from 1,193 in 2018 to 3,124 flights last year.

Engele explained the rise in the number of flights with activities of airBaltic Training Pilot Academy. Also, airBaltic last summer increased the number of flights on Riga-Liepaja route from three to five times a week.

She said that the passengers mostly use flights to Riga for transit and the most popular destinations are Stockholm in Sweden and Billunda and Copenhagen in Denmark.

The airport's presence and activity in the region promotes development of new plans and arrival of new investors.

Aviasabiedriba Liepaja, established in 1993, has a share capital of EUR 1.016 mln, according to information available at Firmas.lv. In 2018, the airport’s operator turned over EUR 62,510, up 69.7% y-o-y, and made a EUR 7,218 profit, recovering from a loss sustained a year ago. Aviasabiedriba Liepaja belongs to the Liepaja City Council.
