Elektrilevi builds 200 km of high-speed internet grid

BC, Tallinn, 03.01.2020.Print version
Electricity distribution system operator Elektrilevi has been building since the start of 2019 an operator-neutral access network, or the so-called internet last mile, which is to enable all telecommunications operators to provide their services on equal terms, the "Aktuaalne kaamera" newscast of public broadcaster ERR reported.

Elektrilevi has presently constructed some 200 kilometers of telecommunications grid with the capability of providing high-speed internet access to around 9,000 households. Some 1,800 customers have already signed up to the project, which should deliver fast internet to its first subscribers by the end of February.

Fast internet will not cover the remotest, least populated areas, however, as according to Elektrilevi, the proximity of the base network and population density still remain the determining factors.

"Not all households will be covered as part of this project, but some 40,000 households supported by the state will be [reached]," Oliver Ruus, head of connection services at Elektrilevi, said.
