New light-vehicle registrations in the Baltic States increased more than 14% in 2016

New light-vehicle (M1&N1) registrations in the Baltic States increased by 6.5% to 15’772 units in IV quarter 2016, that show analysis of fully-processed registrations’ data performed by AV Automotive Research / AutoTyrimai, based on source data obtained from Regitra (Lithuania), CSDD (Latvia) and Maanteeamet (Estonia).

Lithuanian market remained the leader by growth rate and kept its second position in the region (+8.1% to 5’286 units). Latvian market showed slowest growth pace and was the smallest by volume (+4.9% to 4’319 units). Meanwhile Estonia showed moderate growth and safely kept its leading position (+6.3% to 6’167 units).


 New light-vehicle registrations in the Baltic States increased 14.1% to 69’000 units in the full year 2016. All three countries reached positive full-year results: Estonian market still remains obvious leader by volume, but its growth rate was the slowest (+9.7% to 27’350 units), Lithuanian market outpaced the others by growth rate once again and was 2nd by volume (+18.7% to 23’075 units), Latvian market was second by growth rate and the smallest by volume (+15.3% to 18’575 units).


Estonia continues to hold its position as the largest market in the Baltic States, accounting for 39.6% of the total, while Lithuania and Latvia respectively had 33.4% and 26.9% shares.

When calculated per 1’000 inhabitants, Lithuania continues to be in the worst position: its index is just 8.1, while Latvian one is 9.5 and Estonia is clear leader here with 20.7.


There were 59’638 passenger cars (+15.0%) and 9’362 light commercial vehicles (+8.7%) registered in the Baltic States in the full year 2016. The best performing makes (brands) were Toyota (8’344 units), Volkswagen (7’796 units), Skoda (6’181 units), Fiat (4’828 units) and Renault (4’824 units). The most popular models were Fiat 500 (2’843 units), Skoda Octavia (2’743 units), Nissan Qashqai (2’305 units), Volkswagen Passat (1’894 units) and Toyota Auris (1’721 units).
