Electric power generation in Latvia down 1.2% in March

BC, Riga, 02.04.2020.Print version
In March 2020, Latvia generated 670,831 megawatt-hours (MWh) of electric power, down 1.2 percent from the respective period a year ago, Aija Ikstena, a representative of Augstsprieguma Tikls (AST) transmission system operator, informed LETA.

She indicated that electricity consumption fell 3% in March as many businesses scaled down or halted their operations amid the ongoing Covid-19 crisis. Electricity consumption decreased also partly due to warm weather conditions.

AST board member Gatis Junghans said that power consumption dropped by 3% on year both in Latvia and across the Baltics. In the first three months of 2019, the average air temperature was two degrees higher than last year.

In the Baltics, electricity generation decreased by 20% o year, mainly due to reduced output in Estonia, which has cut power generation at oil-share powered plans by half.

During the Covid-19 emergency, AST continues to ensure power transmission in all Latvia, managing and maintaining Latia's critical infrastructure - the power transmission network.

Augstsprieguma Tikls is an independent transmission system operator, which operates the electric power transmission network and ensures security of electric power supply in Latvia, as well as fulfills the following mission: providing power transmission services based on the published transmission service tariffs and providing free third-party access to the transmission network. Augstsprieguma Tikls holds operational control of the transmission system and ensures its stable operation.
