Lithuania is on the right track toward securing sufficient EU funding for the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant decommissioning, Energy Minister Zygimantas Vaiciunas said LETA/BNS after the European Parliament's Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) backed a proposal to allocate 780 mln euros for the closure program in 2021-2027.

"The European Parliament's consistent support for Lithuania's planned Ignalina NPP decommissioning budget shows that we are on the right negotiating path," the minister said in a press release.

"We also maintain regular dialogue with the European Commission, leading to an increasingly better mutual understanding: the final Ignalina NPP decommissioning cost remains unchanged and we are essentially in agreement on figures," he added.

ITRE also believes that the EU should help Lithuania to deal with the problem of the disposal of spent fuel and radioactive waste in a deep repository.

Lithuania will continue active negotiations with EU member states to secure sufficient financing for the Ignalina decommissioning program in the 2021-2027 budget period, the Energy Ministry said in the press release.

The issue will go up for a vote at the European Parliament's plenary sitting in December or January, with a final decision to be made by the European Council.

In a vote on the EU's next multiannual financial framework a week ago, the European Parliament already approved 780 mln euros in funding for the Ignalina program, the amount sought by Lithuania.
