The gas seller Eesti Gaas sold 176.5 mln cubic meters of gas in the first quarter of 2017, 14.8% less than during the same period a year ago, reports LETA/BNS.

"The biggest difference with last year was registered in January, when the average air temperature was higher by 5.4 degrees and the amount of gas used for the production of heat declined as a result," said Eesti Gaas manager Ants Noot.

The use of natural gas in transport meanwhile grew 27.1% y-o-y -- from 1 mln to 1.3 mln cubic meters.

Noot said that where on the one hand the increase in the use of compressed natural gas in transport demonstrates people's increased environmental awareness, on the other hand it is a sign of economical thinking, as compressed natural gas continues to be a fuel approximately half cheaper than gasoline.

Eesti Gaas is planning to open several new gas filling stations in 2017 and 2018, including in Tallinn. The company runs five gas filling stations at this point.

Eesti Gaas sold 12.7 gigawatt-hours of electricity in the three months, 296.9% more than in the first quarter of 2016 when the amount sold was 3.2 gigawatt-hours.

"Even though our volumes remain small for now, we are working towards Eesti Gaas becoming an enery market partner with a comprehensive range of offer to its clients," said Noot.

Eesti Gaas has 1,600 corporate customers and 42,000 household customers and it employs a workforce of more than 200.
