Baltic synchronization discussed in Brussels
"During the meeting, high-level representatives of the
European Commission and countries in the Baltic region plan on discussing the
results of the synchronization study, which was conducted by the Joint Research
Center for the European Commission, and agree on further action necessary for
achieving the political decision of the BEMIP countries, performance of
specific actions in pursuit of implementation of synchronization of the Baltic
states," the Lithuanian Energy Ministry said in a comment.
The Joint Research Center said in its preliminary finding
that the best synchronization scheme for the Baltic states is via Poland with
Western Europe rather than through Scandinavia via Finland. According to unofficial information, the study envisages that the optimum way would be
synchronization via Poland by way of two LitPol Link lines, however, as Poland
is unwilling to build the second link, Lithuania has stated it would agree to
synchronize via one line. However, the plan is objected by Estonia, which
earlier sought synchronization with the Nordic states via Finland.
Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia along with the European
Commission will later have to hold negotiations with Russia and Belarus on
disconnection from the so-called BRELL energy ring, which also includes Russia
and Belarus. The Baltic states have agreed to disconnect from BRELL by 2025.
