Army to be involved in patrolling Latvian-Belarusian border because of Covid-19

Defense Minister Artis Pabriks (For Development/For) has ordered the National Armed Forces to provide support for the State Border Guard by assigning Home Guard members to patrol the Latvian-Belarusian border, Pabriks said on Twitter, referred LETA.

Due to an increase in the number of Covid-19 cases in Belarus, this border section needs to be paid closer attention to, the minister points out.


According to official data provided by Minsk, 163 people had been diagnosed with Covid-19 as of April 1 in Belarus, which has a population of about 9.5 mln. Two people have died from Covid-19 and 53 have recovered in Belarus.


As reported, responding to the State Border Guard's request, the Armed Forces have been involved in guarding the Latvian-Russian border as of March 30.


In response to the request of the State Border Guard, from 1 April the Armed Forces have been providing support to the border guard at the internal borders of the state. From April 1, the Armed Forces have been helping the State Border Guard to issue and receive assurances to persons entering and transiting Latvia from the border with Estonia and Lithuania that they will comply with special Covid-19 containment measures during their stay in Latvia.


Support for the State Border Guard is provided by both soldiers of the Armed Forces and the National Guard.
