Estonian ministry: Commuting between Estonia, Finland to stop

BC, Tallinn, 17.03.2020.Print version
As Finland is about to close its borders, commuting between Estonia and Finland will become impossible and people will have to decide whether it's more important for them to remain working in Finland or return to Estonia, the Estonian Foreign Ministry said LETA/BNS.

The Finnish government has decided to close borders from midnight on March 19, which means that from that point onwards commuting between Estonia and Finland will be no longer possible, spokespeople for the ministry said.

Hence all those who are going from Estonia to Finland for work have to decide whether it's more important to remain in Finland to work or to return to Estonia.

"The Finnish border guard may allow crossing of the border for the purpose of work only in justified cases. Such as to ensure the movement of goods, the provision of a vital service," Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu said.

This category may include drivers who transport goods between Estonia and Finland, and medical workers, the minister added.

It also has to be taken into consideration that entering Estonia from Finland as well as Finland from Estonia will bring with it an obligation to spend 14 days in quarantine.
