Saeima now has legal basis for Riga City Council dismissal

A quorum was not met for the third Riga City Council meeting in a row today, meaning that Saeima now has a legal basis for the dismissal of the Riga City Council, informed LETA.

According to the Law on Local Governments, it a local government meeting fails to meet three times in a row for one reason  of another, MPs then have the opportunity to decide on the dismissal of the respective local government.


For a meeting to be quorate, at least 31 Riga City Council members have to attend it. Only 23 City Council members attended today's meeting.


The meeting was not attended by any opposition City Council members today, as well as some members of Honor to Serve Riga.


As reported, Burovs, whose coalition has fallen apart, has agreed with the opposition parties to convene three council meetings that would not be quorate, thus creating a legal basis for dissolution of the Riga City Council.
