Estonia's position in UN classification of countries has not changed

BC, Tallinn, 09.01.2017.Print version
The position of Estonia in the classification of countries of the United Nations has not changed and hence no changes have taken place related to the Estonian candidacy for a non-permanent seat of the UN Security Council, spokespeople for the Estonian Foreign Ministry said.

"No changes have taken place in the UN division of countries by geographical region and regional group as far as Estonia is concerned. According to the classification of countries by geographical region for statistical use by the United Nations Statistics Division, Estonia belongs among countries of Northern Europe. Under the UN classification by regional group, Estonia belongs in the Eastern European Group. These two classifications are not connected with each other and are made for different purposes," spokesperson for the Estonian Foreign Ministry Mariann Sudakov told.

"Running for a seat in different UN committees and bodies, including the UN Security Council, happens by regional group, of which there are five: Western European and Others Group; Eastern European Group; Asia-Pacific Group; Latin American and Caribbean Group; and African Group," Sudakov said.

Some media reported over the weekend that the UN has classified Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania as Northern European countries instead of Eastern European.

Estonia has announced its bid for a non-permanent seat on the UN Security Council for the period from 2020-2021 and is competing with Romania for the seat set aside for the Eastern European Group.
