Estonia: 8th World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples to be postponed
Due to the emergency situation caused by the COVID-19 virus, the 8th World Congress of Finno-Ugric Peoples, which Russian President Vladimir Putin had been invited to attend by Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid, will be postponed, the Fenno-Ugria non-governmental organization said on Monday.
The new dates of congress, which was initially planned to take place in Tartu from June 17 to 19, 2020, are still not clear. The new dates will be decided by the consultative committee of Finno-Ugric Peoples. The location of the congress, the Estonian National Museum, will remain the same.
In October 2019, Kaljulaid extended invitations to participate in the congress to Finnish President Sauli Niinisto, Hungarian President Janos Ader and Russian President Vladimir Putin. The Russian president has yet to confirm his participation.
The congress, which has since 1992 been held on a rotational basis in Russia, Hungary, Finland and Estonia every four years, has since 2000 each time been attended by Finnish, Hungarian and Estonian presidents. The then president of Russia, Dmitri Medvedev, participated in the congress held in the Russian town Khanty-Mansiysk in 2008.
