200th anniversary of discovery of Antarctica to be marked at Estonian Maritime Museum

The Estonian Maritime Museum is about to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica with a quiz for pupils and the presentation of a postage stamp on Jan. 28, informed LETA/BNS. 


The finals of the quiz for school pupils, held in collaboration with the Estonian Polar Club, will take place in the newly reopened Fat Margaret tower complex of the Maritime Museum throughout the day. The top five performers in the quiz will be awarded a trip to an expedition to Antarctica in March.


The Maritime Museum has invited 27 of the students who embarked on the polar quiz at the beginning of November to take part in the finals. Among the finalists there are pupils of grades 8 to 12 from Tallinn, Tartu, Kilingi-Nomme, Lihula, Torva and Kohila.


At 5 p.m., a joint Estonian-Russian postage stamp booklet will be presented at the Seaplane Harbor, simultaneously with a presentation held in Antarctica. 


The design of the stamp is by Ivan Ulyanovsky from Russia and the design of the first day cover is by Roman Matkiewicz from the Estonian Maritime Museum.


The presentation will be attended by the director of the Estonian Maritime Museum, Urmas Dresen, CEO of Eesti Post Ansi Arumeel, chief of the Antarctica expedition Tiit Pruuli, members of the expedition vessel Admiral Bellingshausen and guests.


If possible, a telephone connection with be established with Antarctica where Estonian President Kersti Kaljulaid is on a visit at present.
