Survey: Issue of whether to allow fireworks in Estonia on NYE dividing society

BC, Tallinn, 10.02.2020.Print version
When it comes to people in favor of or against firework displays on New Year's Eve, the society is divided -- 41 percent of respondents find that firework displays should be continued as before, while 43 percent believe the situation should be altered or that fireworks should be banned altogether, it appears from a survey carried out by pollster Kantar Emor noted LETA/BNS.

At that, more than half of men consider fireworks to be an important tradition and/or enjoyable spectacle, while only a third of women think so. At the same time, as many as 40 percent of women, twice as many as men, would like to replace fireworks with something else, such as light installations. However, there are also very few women in favor of a total ban on fireworks.

Reet Marii Rokk, research manager at Kantar Emor, said that the issue of setting off fireworks has become increasingly topical not only for ordinary citizens but also for municipalities -- on New Year's Eve, some towns and rural municipalities abandoned fireworks altogether.

"With the escalation of environmental issues, we have an increasing number of those who regard fireworks as annoying light and sound pollution," Rokk said. "In addition, constant shooting has a strong impact on the health of domestic animals. While we did not ask dog owners in specific about the fireworks, we can speculate that those opposed to the shooting make up the majority among them as well," she added.

According to Rokk, the survey nevertheless indicates that there is no social ground for banning fireworks.

"Very few were in favor of a categorical ban, those skeptical would rather suggest other alternatives, be it more expensive silent fireworks or light installations. For many it is still an important tradition, for them, a quiet New Year's Eve without shooting and fireworks would be like a dog without a tail," Rokk said.
