Registered unemployment rate in Latvia declines slowly but steadily

BC, Riga, 13.04.2017.Print version
The rate of Latvia’s registered unemployment has been declining slowly but steadily and is now lower than a year ago, Evita Simsone, director of the State Employment Agency, said in an interview with LNT commercial TV channel writes LETA.

At present, the registered unemployment rate stands at 8.1%, Simsone said, adding that joblessness is on decline in all regions of Latvia. The drop has been slower in Latgale, which still has the highest unemployment rate – 18.4%. The head of the government agency noted, however, that the gap between Latgale and other regions was not growing wider.

The number of job vacancies registered with the agency has been growing, which is an indication of faster economic growth, Simsone said.

She also said that currently the State Employment Agency has no information about any unstable companies planning massive layoffs.
