In January this year residents’ opinion about the overall situation in Latvia continued to worsen, according to the latest Latvian Barometer survey conducted by SKDS research agency referred LETA.

On 10 February 2020, the Ambassador of Denmark, Flemming Stender, was summoned to a meeting with the State Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Andris Pelss, to receive an official demarche concerning the planned extradition of the Latvian citizen, Kristine Misane, to the Republic of South Africa, BC learned from the ministry.

Survey: Issue of whether to allow fireworks in Estonia on NYE dividing society

When it comes to people in favor of or against firework displays on New Year's Eve, the society is divided -- 41 percent of respondents find that firework displays should be continued as before, while 43 percent believe the situation should be altered or that fireworks should be banned altogether, it appears from a survey carried out by pollster Kantar Emor noted LETA/BNS.

The situation concerning the rights of sexual minorities in Latvia is still the worst in the European Union, according to the latest Rainbow Europe Index on sexual minority rights in the EU published by ILGA Europe referred LETA.

Latvia: Smaller gender pay gap recorded

Provisional data of 2018 show that average gross earnings of females were 14.1% smaller than those of males, which is the lowest indicator registered since 2012. In 2017, females per hour earned on average 15.7% less than males. Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) estimate shows that the greatest gender pay gap (17.3%) was recorded in 2014.
