Russia's tightened border control formalities increase demand for Latvian road carriers

BC, Riga, 28.11.2014.Print version
Russia's tightened inspections on Lithuanian road carriers have increased the demand for Latvian carriers, however, there is no point in rejoicing prematurely, as there is no guarantee that Latvian business owners will remain exempt from such inspections, the head of road carrier association Latvijas auto Valdis Trezins said in an interview with Latvian Radio this morning, informs LETA.

Trezins reminded that the long truck lines on the Latvia-Russia border are forming due to the tightened inspections on Lithuanian vehicles, which slows down the entire queue.

He admitted that Latvian business owners can benefit from such a situation, as the demand for their services grows, however, "there are no guarantees" that Russia could not apply such sanctions on other countries as well, including Latvia, taking into account Latvia's upcoming presidency and Lithuania's unfortunate experience during its presidency. Lithuanians are, after all, the largest competitors to Latvian road carriers.

Trezins said that Russia's embargo has left a negative impact on Latvia's road carriers, yet the first "wave of sanctions" was successfully survived.

As reported, long truck lines began forming on Latvia-Russia border on November 25 due to enhanced border control formalities being carried out on the Russian side.
