Estonian cargo ship in danger of sinking in Stockholm archipelago

BC, Tallinn, 30.10.2014.Print version
Estonian company-owned cargo ship Kertu, which was on its way to Kokkola, Finland, is in danger of sinking in the Stockholm archipelago in Sweden, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

The ship, sailing under the flag of Malta but belonging to Estonian company Hansa Shipping, ran aground, but managed to get loose on its own, Svenska Dagbladet's online edition said. The accident happened at about 5 o'clock Wednesday morning.

However, the ship was damaged and has leaked oil into the sea. Swedish media reported that there is 52 tonnes of fuel on board.

The local coast guard confirmed that the sea is windy and waves high. There is towing boat by the ship but strong wind disturbs rescue work.

The situation is serious and there is a real risk that the ship could sink.

As a large amount of water had entered the ship, it was decided at around noon to evacuate seven crewmen. However, the ship captain and mechanic, and some Coast Guard officers are still on board. There are four Rescue Board ships and two Coast Guard Rescue helicopters and a Coast Guard vessel at the site.

The vessel was built in 1996. It is 90 meters long and 13 meters wide.
