Estonia to apply for funding of Rail Balticaa in February

The pan-Baltic railway line Rail Baltica's Estonian project manager Miiko Peris said that Estonia intends to submit the first, 191 million euros financing application already in February 2015, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

"Rail Baltica is definitely an important project for the European Union. For the European Commission, it is among five or six most high priority projects, which has to be implemented, which the European Commission is ready to finance," said Peris.

 

The Estonian Ministry of Economy on Thursday presented the Rail Baltica preferred route in Estonia. The final version of the route will be determined in early November. Next week, public discussions in counties take place. Then, county governors will announce their preferences about the route and then the route will be presented to the government.

 

The North-South direction route's length in the Estonian territory is 211.4 kilometres. In Estonia, it is going to cost a total of 1.1 billion euros. The plan is to ask for about 650 million euros funding from the EU.
