BTA insurance: October, December most dangerous months for drivers in Lithuania

BC, Vilnius, 25.09.2014.Print version
Over the period of 3 years the non-life insurance company BTA registered almost 13,000 car accidents in the three largest cities of Lithuania as 58% were registered in Vilnius, 27% – in Kaunas and 14% – in Klaipeda, informs LETA/ELTA.

Compared to other months, the number of accidents registered in October and December is larger almost by one-third, while in summer the number of accidents is lowest, the insurance company BTA said.

"The higher accident rate is always observed in autumn and at the beginning of winter. During the first month of the beginning of the cold season, when the school year starts, the number of collisions always increases in the Lithuanian cities. Later the first frosts begin, which is also quite a challenge for drivers, followed by the first snow. It takes almost a whole month for drivers to get used to the different road covering. But the hours at which the highest accident rate is observed do not change as the largest number of accidents occur during lunch time", says Gediminas Radavicius, the motor insurance specialist at BTA.

Based on the company's statistical data, roads in Lithuania appear to be the safest for drivers on the first Sunday of the month after 4 p.m.

The data of BTA reveals that over the last 3 years the number of accidents in Vilnius exceeded 7,500, in Kaunas – 3,500, and in Klaipeda – 1,900.
