Lithuania needed 10 years to open the new Central Klaipeda Terminal
LTL 110 million (EUR 32 million) of state and European Union funds were
invested, and there have been high expectations that new shipping lines would be
attracted. However, the situation in the shipping market changed substantially
in that time.
So, will we have to forget new shipping lines? The heads of the
terminal, the seaport authority and the shipping company DFDS Seaways believe that despite the complicated situation the new
terminal will get its golden opportunity.
"None of the shipping operators comes to work to the terminal
"on paper". Partners, especially in this sector, are found when they
see the potential. We have achieved a lot throughout the years, we have done
our homework. The operator of the terminal is doing what it can. I urge
everyone to be patient. Working as partners we are putting efforts to promote
the new terminal. I do not think we should count our chickens before they
hatch, we should instead wait for the end of the year," said Arvydas Vaitkus, Director General of
Klaipeda State Seaport Authority.
