Estonia's state-owned rail freight company EVR Cargo's cargo transport volume amounted to 1.06 million tonnes in August 2014, a decrease of 5.7% from August last year, Äripäev.ee/LETA reports.

The first eight months' total volume, 10.14 million tonnes, is by 4.6% less than at the same time last year.

EVR Cargo Board Chairman Ahto Altjõe said that August was also characterized by a decrease of transport of oil products. "In addition to a decrease in Russian transit volumes, the transport of oil products was affected by a fall in the volume of transit goods from Belarus and retail fuel imported from Lithuania to the Estonian retail market," said Altjõe.

The transport of liquid mineral fuels fell by 25% in August in a year to 322,000 tonnes. Transport of oil shale fell by 1% to 167,000 tonnes year-on-year.

In eight months, the transport of liquid mineral fuels fell by 13% in a year to 4.19 million tonnes. Transport of fertilisers grew by 16% to 2.19 mln tonnes and oil shale fell by 10% to 1.59 million tonnes year-on-year.

Container cargo transport continued to grow, by 28% year-on-year to 5,897 TEU in August and by 32% to 50,593 in eight months.

Transit cargo formed in 8 months 6.86 million tonnes, or 68% of the total cargo volume, increasing by 1% in a year.
