Streets of Riga cleaned daily to improve air quality

BC, Riga, 14.08.2014.Print version
Wet street cleaning is one of the regular measures carried out in order to improve the quality of air in Riga, Riga City Council spokeswoman Ilze Dislere informed LETA.

In order to reduce the amount of dust, streets are being flushed daily using a special vehicle that follows a specific schedule. The schedule can change during rainy days, when wet cleaning is unnecessary, and be replaced with other measures, for example, removal of mud.

Celu parvalde is the company responsible for road maintenance in Riga. The company's specialists regularly monitor the quality of these measures. In case of a problem, the company must re-do the service using its own funds.

All the necessary road maintenance measures, including covering the roads with salt in winter, renovation works and other measures, are carried out throughout the year. The amount of funds allotted to road maintenance, is EUR 15 million.

Road maintenance is usually carried out during the night in order to keep the traffic undisturbed.
