Number of new car registrations in Latvia decreased more than four-fold in January

Only 494 new car registrations were recorded in Latvia in January 2009, which is a four-fold decrease compared to January 2008, when the total number of new car registrations was 2,191, according to the Latvian Authorized Automobile Dealers Association's data.

In January, 77 new "Volkswagen" vehicles were registered, which though it is 59% less than in January 2008. The long-time market leader "Toyota" was second in January with 57 new car registrations – a decrease of 79.1%, writes LETA.

 

"Ford" was third with 40 new car registrations (56.5% down), and "Mitsubishi" was fourth with 37 new cars.

 

The largest decreases in the number of new car registrations were reported by "Skoda" (87.6%, 24 new cars registered), "Honda" (92.5%, 15 new cars), "Opel" (92.1%, 13 new cars) and "Hyundai" (87.2%, 14 new cars).

 

Only "Land Rover" and "SAAB" registered an increase in new car registrations, however, they both sold not more than ten cars in Latvia in January.

 

The total number of new car registrations in Latvia last year was 19,192, or 40.9% less than in 2007.

 

In 2007, new car registrations in Latvia increased 26.8% from 2006, reaching 32,497 units. In 2006 the increase was 53%.
