The cycling event "Mes PAR velo!", part of the bicycle marathon "Barona taka", will take place in Riga at 10 a.m. this Friday, July 18 - everyone is invited to take part in a collective ride through Riga to remind drivers that cyclists are full-fledged traffic participants as well, Gatis Dzerve, the spokesman for the environment protection society "Pedas", the organizer of the race, informed LETA.

The bicycle ride through Riga takes place every year during the bicycle marathon "Barona taka". It involves the participants of the bicycle marathon, and every cyclist who is concerned about traffic safety and improving the understanding between cyclists and drivers is also invited to take part. The purpose of the event is to remind drivers that bicyclists are equal participants in traffic, and to emphasize the importance of traffic rules and of mutual respect on the road.

The ride starts at 10 a.m. at the Ethnographic Open-Air Museum of Latvia, the gathering for the event will begin at 9.30 a.m. From the museum the cyclists will ride along Brivibas gatve to the Freedom Monument. The ride will end on the Town Hall Square where all the participants are invited to take a picture together.

At the moment participants in the bicycle marathon have reached the halfway point of the route in spite of the hot weather and some flat tires, but such small inconveniences do not worry them. This year the participants can enjoy different cultural activities and visit a great number of cultural sites. Every day brings new adventures and competition. The remaining marathon section, from Riga to Dundaga, will continue via Slampe, Lestene, Jaunpils, Strutele, Irlava, Zemite, Kandava, Sabile, Talsi and Laumas Nature Park.

New bicyclists can still join the ride at any stage of the marathon by calling the chief organizer Gatis Dzerve at 20343673.

The bicycle marathon "Barona taka" this year takes place already for the 10th time, which is also the last time the race is organized. It continues for seventeen days from July 7 to 23. The route starts from the Estonian city of Tartu, and ends in the Latvian town Dundaga. The marathon gives everyone the opportunity to see the most beautiful sights in Latvia, to plant a tree, meet new friends and experience unforgettable adventures during the 1,000-kilometer journey across Latvia along the route that the great Latvian folk song collector Krisjanis Barons covered on foot at the age of 24.

This year the sponsors of the marathon are the joint-stock company "Latvijas valsts mezi", "Apollo" and Latvian State Radio 2.
