Lietuvos gelezinkeliai: Lithuanian rail market is open

BC, Vilnius, 24.04.2014.Print version
Having released EU Transport Scoreboard, the European Commission stated that Lithuania's rail market is closed to competition. However, company Lithuanian Railways disagrees with such an assessment; according to it, there are no legal obstacles to use public rail infrastructure in Lithuania, informs LETA/ELTA.

At present there are 35 companies that have licences to exercise commercial activities of railway transport, however, none of them transports either freight, or passengers by rail, and the only one company engaged in rail transportation is Lithuanian Railways (Lietuvos gelezinkeliai).

According to the company, special features of Lithuanian rail market determine unattractiveness of such activities for the private business, as it is not subsidised and requires big investment.

According to the representatives of Lithuanian Railways, the European Commission provides only a one-sided assessment of European railways; moreover, the fact that there are more than one rail carriers does not prove the effectiveness of the market.
