Lithuania's PM: Rail Baltica branch-line must go through Vilnius

BC, Vilnius, 22.04.2014.Print version
Lithuanian Government will continue to pursue that the standard gauge railway project Rail Baltica connecting the Baltic States would go through Vilnius, informs LETA/ELTA.

This was the position held by the Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius on Tuesday when he read the annual report in the Parliament.

"Implementing one of the largest Lithuanian and European railway station projects Rail Baltica2 which will connect Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania and Poland, we will make sure that the branch-line connects Lithuanian capital Vilnius, the only capital which wasn't included in the initial project. This isn't the matter of the status; it is an important element of transit infrastructure." – said the prime minister.

Earlier Butkevicius mentioned that excluding Vilnius from the initial Rail Baltica project was the Government's mistake.

Lithuania is seeking financing from the EU for the Rail Baltica branch-line from Kaunas to Vilnius. As reported, Estonia casted the most doubts.
