EcoMin: road tax wouldn't be reasonable in Estonia

BC, Tallinn, 15.04.2014.Print version
Estonian economy and communications minister Urve Palo said when answering inquiries of MPs in the Riigikogu that she doesn’t consider it reasonable to implement a roads tax in Estonia, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

"I personally think that it isn’t reasonable to implement a roads tax in Estonia. Estonia is a very small state and there are alternative roads where it isn’t possible to collect the road tax, for example," said Palo.

"This means that on main roads, the load will decrease, people will start using smaller roads, traffic safety will decrease and eventually we won't collect any money anyway," said the minister.

Palo said that due to Estonia being a small state and having a low population figure, a road tax just wouldn't work in Estonia.
