On the invite of Minister of Transport and Communications of the Republic of Lithuania Rimantas Sinkevicius to commemorate the National Traffic Safety Day (6th April 2014), 32 representatives of state and public organizations signed a Memorandum on the improvement of Traffic Safety, Traffic Culture and decrease of Road Traffic Injuries in Lithuania, reports LETA/ELTA, referring to Ministry of Transport.

"We are here today to unite our forces. With the signature of the Memorandum, we commit to take actions to make a safe and responsible road-user behavior a norm. Nevertheless the fact that, in recent years, a consistent decrease of road traffic deaths was registered, we cannot stop at the halfway. It is necessary to continue to work in uniformity and seek zero road fatalities" – said Minister of Transport and Communications Rimantas Sinkevicius.

According to the minister, Traffic Safety depends on each one of us, for that reason, with the Memorandum states commit to cooperate closely as well as work together in order to avoid senseless deaths and injuries on the Lithuanian Roads. Every citizen of Lithuania is invited to behave responsibly on roads as well as respect and protect each other.

In 2013, the number of people killed on roads was the lowest in the last 54 years (in 1959, 279 people were killed, in 1991 – 1173 people, in 2013 – 258 people). In addition, the number of children injured in road accidents decreased five times. Finally, in comparison with the statistics of 1991, the number of road traffic deaths decreased by 4.5 times in the last year.
