The number of procurement contracts from the Latvijas Valsts celi state highway maintenance company has decreased to just 17 in 2009, with the total amount of LVL 99.65 million. Originally Latvijas Valsts celi was planning to sign 86 contracts this year, worth LVL 145.21 million altogether.
As a result, the volume and the quality of road maintenance in Latvia will decrease, moreover, several road construction and road maintenance companies may bankrupt.
Latvijas Valsts celi board chairman Talis Straume points out nevertheless that road construction and road maintenance projects are necessary for not only the state but also local governments, although local governments will probably also cut the spending on road construction and road maintenance.
