Lembergs: Freeport of Ventspils must maintain its current cargo turnover

BC, Riga, 21.05.2013.Print version
Due to Russia continuing actively developing its ports, the Freeport of Ventspils does not predict increases in its cargo turnover, however, without any administrative obstacles, the port will be able to maintain its current cargo turnover and perhaps achieve more, Ventspils Mayor Aivars Lembergs (For Latvia and Ventspils) says in an interview with LETA.

As reported, World Bank experts have presented their interim report on the competitiveness and management of Latvian ports, addressing several critical comments to the Riga and Ventspils freeports. Both are reproached for their transit dependence on other countries with their own ports.

Latvia cannot change its geographical location. The fact that Russia develops its ports is objective reality and Lembergs cannot be reproached for Russia building Primorsk and Ust-Luga, developing St. Petersburg, Kaliningrad and its ports. Russia is implementing its transport development strategy for 2030, admits Lembergs.

Freeport of Ventspils is expected to turn over 28 million tons of cargo per year. "All our actions are aimed at maintaining and strengthening our competitiveness, retaining these 28 million tons," says Lembergs.
