Simmermann: Rail Baltica project could be economically viable thanks to cargo shipments from Finland

In an interview to the business information portal Nozare.lv, the former head of Estonian Rail (Eesti Raudtee), now Latvijas dzelzcels chief engineer Kaido Simmermann said that the high-speed railway Rail Baltica project could be economically viable thanks to cargo shipments from Finland, taking into account that cargo tariffs for shipments by sea have increased, writes LETA.

As the Estonian rail expert points out, the largest flow of cargo shipment will come from Finland, where local businessmen are already interested in the Rail Baltica project, taking into account that cargo shipment tariffs on the Baltic Sea will increase from 2015. "No one knows by how much these tariffs will increase, but there must be some sort of alternative. Finland sends large volumes of cargo shipments to Europe. The Rail Baltica rail line will be able to take a portion of these shipments. If the Finns cannot find cheaper modes of transportation to Europe, they will not be in business," Simmermann informed.

"I can truly confirm that the Finns are very interested in this project. If cargo tariffs for shipments by sea increase by 40%, they will be out of business, as Finland is located too far from the center of Europe," Simmermann added.

As reported, the implementation of Rail Baltica could cost EUR 1.27 billion (LVL 889 million) to Latvia and EUR 3.68 billion (LVL 2.57 billion) to the Baltic States altogether. The European Commission could co-fund 85% of the project's costs.
