Lithuanian government shows interest towards the cooperation with Estonian Air

The Lithuanian government has shown interest towards shorter or longer-term cooperation with Estonian national carrier Estonian Air, not excluding even creation of a joint venture but Estonian economy minister Juhan Parts says that it is too soon to tell where the talks with the Lithuanians could lead, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

"The Lithuanian government is interested in short-term or possible long-term cooperation with aviation companies operating in this region. It is too soon to tell whether it corresponds to Estonian interests, interests of Estonian Air," said Parts.

The short-term cooperation would concern the next six months when Lithuania is the European Union's presiding state. "If you mean short-term plans, for the presidency period, then I think that the company is relatively flexible and we know that the company has free plane resources," said Parts.

In long-term perspective, a shareholding of the Lithuanian state in Estonian Air could be considered and the company could be partly based in Vilnius. "Our main issue is to stabilise Estonian Air and the company to get an accept from the European Union, that is our priority. But when there is time and interest, then different possibilities could be studied more closely," said Parts.

The Lithuanian transport and communications ministry did not agree to comment upon possible cooperation with Estonian Air.
