Road congestion charge for trucks to be introduced in 2009
Print versionThis has been indicated in the TM informative report, heard by the government today. The charge will apply to foreign heavy goods vehicles and those vehicles from Latvia on international routes. For lorries performing only inland transportation, a charge of LVL 281 will apply, that will have to be paid once per year.
TM prognosticates that the total revenue from the road congestion charge could amount to LVL 10 million per year. The funds gained will be used for developing road infrastructure, as well as for construction and maintenance of parking lots in the frontier zone and for ensuring the traffic organization. The parking lots will be owned by the country.
It is planned to put in order the frontier zone infrastructure before 2010 by expanding the border checkpoints, developing parking lots and reconstructing the highway stretch Ludza-Terehova.
Initially the parking lots for lorries in the frontier zone will be available free of charge, with capacity to provide parking space for 500 to 600 trucks; they are planned to be open in summer this year
