Strazds: excise tax on fuel should be raised in Latvia

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 05.11.2008.Print version
In order to stimulate fuel economy and lessen the prevalence of imports over exports in Latvia, the fuel excise tax should be raised, as economist Andris Strazds of the Stockholm School of Economics in Riga pointed out in an interview.

Andris Strazds.

"The government has decided that the fuel excise tax should not be changed, however, every time we you refuel the car, it is the Lithuanian or the Russian economy that you support by doing it," the economist explained LETA.

"Understanding that the right moment for a fundamental tax reform has already been missed, the main task should nevertheless be to ease residents' income tax burden, whereas consumption taxes should be increased," Strazds underlined, adding that these are exactly the relatively low consumption taxes, alongside with other factors, that contributed to import growth over the course of the past years and also to the surge in the current account deficit.
