Free public transportation in Riga would cost at least LVL 35 million per year, but the Riga City Council currently cannot afford such expenditures, Riga Mayor Nils Usakovs (Harmony Center) said in an interview on Latvian Radio today.

The Riga City Council, following the example of Tallinn, has considered introducing free public transportation in the city.

If the costs of free public transportation in Riga are estimated in accordance with the same principles as in Tallinn, they would amount to LVL 35 million per year. "At the moment, we cannot pull them off," admitted the mayor.

Usakovs agreed that free public transportation would promote the economic activity of Rigans, however, its gains would not outweigh expenditures.
