Ligi: Estonian state doesn't plan to up car taxes

Juhan Tere, BC, Tallinn, 31.05.2012.Print version
Although the European Commission proposed that Estonia could think about implementing new transport taxes, finance minister Jürgen Ligi says that the government does not intend to burden car owners further, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

The European Commission recommended to Estonia yesterday that annual car tax, energy-related taxes, tax on owning or registering a motor vehicle and garbage tax could help achieve environmental aims and reduce the tax burden on workforce.

Ligi said that the Estonian government has said before that it considers taxing consumption and polluting the right thing.

"Facilitating car tax is not in that list, the Committee mentions it in the analysis as one possibility but we have rather high fuel excise tax already and we don’t want to burden car owners further. It is also regionally painful since in many regions a car is the only choice," said Ligi.
