Estonian authorities conducted a check arriving and departing passengers' documents at the Old City Harbor on Sunday, and revealed 145 passengers without identification documents, the Estonian national broadcasting corporation ERR reports.

During the day, 7,500 passengers were checked by the Estonian border guard, police, the Maritime Administration and the Tax and Customs Board, writes LETA.

Of those checked, 16 passengers provided expired documents and another ten attempted to travel with tickets purchased under another person's name. Four passengers also tried to get on ships without any ticket at all, as the North Prefecture reports.

Rene Hartõkainen, the North Prefecture's border security director, said travelers often forget to carry valid identification because there are no border checks in the Schengen zone. However, the absence of passport control on the national borders within the Schengen area does not exempt travelers from the obligation of carrying a valid identification document.
