CPB of Latvia: to a large extent, illegal smuggling cannot be carried successfully without help from officials

Smuggling illegal goods into the country is a quick and lucrative way to make money, unfortunately, officials are also involved in this illegal activity in Latvia. It is clear that large-scale smuggling cannot be carried out successfully without the support of officials, the deputy chief of the Corruption Prevention Bureau (CPB), Juta Strike, said during a press conference today.

Last year, one of the main priorities of the CPB was to identify those persons involved in shadow economy, and who are hiding illegal revenue. The bureau has collected extensive evidence against several such officials, Strike said. She said that one of these cases includes the criminal case against a former State Revenue Service officer, now-suspended Finance Ministry official, who according to LETA archives is most likely the controversial Vladimirs Vaskevics.

At the same time, the CPB also detained several State Revenue Service officials last year, who are suspected of participating in illegal shadow economy activity. She also added that evidence has also been collected against a department director at the State Police's Economy Police Department.
