Latvijas auto asked Latvian government to raise excise tax on fuel

Alla Petrova, BC, Riga, 23.07.2008.Print version
Representatives of the Latvian International Trucking Association Latvijas auto yesterday handed Prime Minister Ivars Godmanis (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way) a memorandum, asking the government not to raise excise tax on fuel and to reduce the administrative burden in order to avert a crisis in the trucking sector, which has been suffering losses due to soaring fuel prices, as the association's representatives told reporters.

Valdis Trezins.

The memorandum will also be submitted to Transport Minister Ainars Slesers (Latvia's First Party/Latvia's Way). Latvijas auto believes that excise tax on fuel must be reduced, and the plans to introduce road tax in Latvia must be abandoned.

Latvijas auto President Valdis Trezins stressed that the excise tax on fuel was meant for road maintenance, not to prop up the budget, therefore Latvijas auto wants all the revenue from the tax to be spent on maintenance of highways and roads in Latvia. A road tax should only be introduced in 2011: under the circumstances the government has to make up its mind what it needs more – tax revenues or companies that pay the taxes.

Latvijas auto representatives stressed that they would like to avoid strikes, because strikes in other countries did not achieve anything.

Latvijas auto, which unites 600 Latvian transport companies, believes that if the Latvian government does not offer aid for the transport sector and introduces road tax in Latvia, many companies may go bankrupt in the near future.
