From 9 a.m. May 24 until 6 p.m. on June 1, 2010, border control will be temporarily restored between Latvia and EU countries, in accordance with a government instruction approved at the beginning of May.

As LETA was informed by Interior Ministry press representative, Mareks Matisons, the restoration of border control is necessary for security reasons in the build up to the spring session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, which will take place in Riga from May 28 to June 1.

Border control will be restored on ten roads – seven which cross the Latvian-Lithuanian border, and three which cross the Latvian-Estonian border. Border checks will also be carried out at Riga ferry port and Riga International Airport. While the Parliamentary Assembly is in progress, random checks will also be carried out in the area adjacent to the Lithuanian and Estonian borders.

Those intending to cross the border during this period should take a valid passport with them, and also carry vehicle documents where appropriate. The State Border Guard asks the public to refrain from crossing the border where possible between now and June 1, and also to bear in mind that queues and delays could be experienced at crossing points.
