In comparison to the month of March 2009, in March 2010 the cargo transport volume in the Tallinn Airport fell by nearly three fourths, while passenger transport decreased less, writes LETA/Äripäev.ee. While in March 2009, the Tallinn Airport was used to carry 2,058 tonnes of cargo, this year the amount was 609 tonnes – 70.4% less.

In the year-on-year comparison, the cargo volumes in January this year grew by 15.3% (from 1,818 tonnes to 2,096 tonnes) and in February by 11.2% (from 1,839 tonnes to 2,044 tonnes).

In comparison to January this year, the cargo transport in March fell by 70.9% and in comparison to the month of February 70.2%.

Erik Sakkov, a member of the management board of the Tallinn Airport, noted that the major decline was due to transit to Russia. “Much of the cargo through Tallinn has been linked to the transit to Russia. Estonian service providers cannot have much impact on the market and are dependent on the demand at the destination point,” he explained.

In passenger transport, the Tallinn Airport provided services to 3.8% fewer passengers in March than during the same month last year (the fall was from 113,627 to 109,280). The year-on-year decline in passenger numbers in January was 10.9% and in February 8.5%.

In comparison to the passenger numbers in January (88,530 persons) and to February (83,945 persons), the number of passengers in the Tallinn Airport in March grew by 23.4% and by 30.2%, respectively.
