The Civil Aviation Agency has launched official investigation to determine why two airBaltic planes could not land in Riga due to the opening ceremony for the "New Wave" pop music contest, and had to land at the Tallinn and Vilnius airports. As the newspaper Diena informs, this caused significant inconvenience for 243 passengers altogether.

According to the Civil Aviation Agency's head Maris Gorodcovs, an air show was taking place in Jurmala to mark the start of the "New Wave" song contest, and the airspace above Jurmala was off limits for other aircraft, writes LETA.

"It should not have happened. I cannot tell you right now why it happened. An investigative commission will be set up, it will produce a report, and then we will be able to provide further detail," said Gorodcovs. Several institutions granted permission for the air show. The Riga International Airport is not responsible.

Because of the "New Wave" air show, which also included the launch of balloons with the flags of the nations participating in the contest, the airBaltic flights from Munich and Kiev were diverted to Tallinn and Vilnius, respectively.
