Ventspils port terminals see 40.8% drop in cargo turnover in 10 months

During the first ten months of 2020, terminals operating at the northwestern Latvian port of Ventspils reloaded 10.723 million tons of cargo, which is a decrease of 40.8% against the respective period a year ago, writes LETA, according to the information published by the Ventspils port.

Of the cargo handled by the port's terminals in the ten months, liquid cargo accounted for 6.905 tons, down 21.1% from the respective period in previous year. Bulk cargo shrank 76.8% to 1.691 million tons and general cargo rose 1.7% to 2.127 million tons.


In October 2020, cargo handling in Ventspils fell 28.8% to 1.083 million tons. Liquid cargo accounted for 644,000 tons of this amount, down 24.2% on year, bulk cargo reduced two times to 226,000 tons, and general cargo increased 1.4% on year to 213,000 tons.


During the first ten months of 2020, the port handled 1,090 ships, down 15.7% from the same period a year ago. Of the vessels served at the port in the first ten months of this year 775 were dry cargo ships and 315 were tankers.


Ventspils is Latvia's second largest port by cargo turnover.
