Passenger numbers on trains and regional bus routes in Latvia down in first half of October

BC, Riga, 27.10.2020.Print version
The number of passengers carried on trains and regional bus routes declined in the first half of October 2020 in Latvia, LETA was told at the Road Transport Administration.

Representatives of the Road Transport Administration informed that from October 5 to 11, the number of bus passengers dropped 9% and the number of rail passengers declined 6% from a week before. From October 12 to 18 the decrease was 13% and 8% respectively.

The Road Transport Administration attributed the drop in bus and rail passengers to the fact that many people have started working entirely or partly from home, as well as to the changed schedules of schools.

The transport authority indicated that although the number of passengers has dropped on most routes, the number of departures is not being reduced because passengers' current mobility trends differ from those observed during the state of emergency in the spring.

Unlike in the spring when passenger numbers plummeted and some routes could be closed, now there is no one dominating trend that would reflect the passengers' mobility habits. Over the past couple of weeks, the number of passengers on the same route has been constantly fluctuating, said Gusts Asmanis, head of the Road Transport Administration's public transport department.
